the beginning of pleasant
On the phone or in person, make sure you smile before you get in front of your prospect
or customer.
A genuine smile... One of those you get when you think about your child taking their first steps or graduating from school – the vacation smile – the just-landed-the-deal smile. Pick something that works for you.
Make it a rule rather than an exception (or a sometimes thing). If you lead, make it a standard operating procedure amongst your team - an expectation of performance.
People enjoy working with pleasant people, and a smile is where pleasantness begins.
With all its benefits, it should be easier to make the norm than it sometimes seems.
Be awake. Make smiling a habit in your sales world.
sales smiles
Here are several ideas to help make it happen...
- Place a mirror on your desk labeled with the word "smile". Use it to check yourself before you make a call, and then throughout a call.
- Post or carry pictures that typically make you smile. Pause for a moment before a sales call to review them. Change them periodically so their effect remains fresh. Make one the background on your computer.
- Create a few positive mental anchors – a visual of your child or spouse smiling, a pet, a joke. Pause and reflect on one just before you make contact with a prospect or customer.
- Consider a few hilarious moments in your life – moments that almost always make you laugh. Give each of the events a headline and write them down. Post or carry them with you, pausing to review one just before a sales call.
- Smile at others and let them reflect it back to you.
- Just before you make a sales call, remember how lucky you really are.
